University of Hawaii at Hilo freshman Jamie Hall shot a 9-over 81 and finished tied for 21st at the Pacific West Conference golf championships on Tuesday at the Waikoloa Kings Course, but didn’t walk away empty handed.
Despite UHH’s struggles on its home turf — each of the five golfers shot their worst score in the final round — Hall was named the Co-PacWest Player of the Year, an honor he shared with Cal Baptist’s Steven Watson, who won the individual title with a 5-under 211 total.
Grand Canyon finished with a three-round 17-over 871 total and captured its fourth PacWest title in the last six years, beating Dixie State, which posted an 887, by 16 strokes. Tied for second and nine shots back, UHH placed third with an 895 total.
The top seven golfers earned All-PacWest honors. They were Watson, 69-211; Dixie State’s Kyle Chappell, 69-214; Grand Canyon’s Marcus Synegal, 73-215; BYU-Hawaii’s Jon Scolari, 77-216; GCU’s Mark Geddes, 72-217; GCU’s Ryan Mahoney, 77-219; GCU’s Brandon Moore, 77-220.
On the second team were Hawaii Pacific’s Ian Boat, 79-222; Academy of Art’s Stuart Favretto, 80-222; and UHH’s Travis Russell, 78-223; Corey Kozuma, 76-223; and Travis Shimomura, 80-224.
UHH’s Earl Tamiya was named PacWest Coach of the Year.
